A tuberosity is usually found behind the backmost molar in the upper jaw. It is a protrusion of tissue and is covered by gum tissue. Typically, this excess tissue does not bother the bite or the functionality of the patient’s teeth, it can be a hindrance when trying to fit dentures, crowns and bridges. Because of the potential to cause those dental appliances to improperly fit, a tuberosity reduction is typically performed. A tuberosity is typically worse in those patients who have had multiple teeth removed from the upper jaw. This is a minimally invasive procedure can be done quickly in a single office visit.

How Is A Tuberosity Reduction Procedure Done?

A local anesthetic is used to numb the patient. If the situation seems a bit more complicated, then a general anesthetic can be used, helping the patient relax before the procedure begins. After the patient is comfortable and the staff has been assured the patient will not feel any discomfort or pain the excess gum tissue is removed.

Although tuberosity reduction surgeries were very common even as recent as twenty years ago, they are not performed as much as they once were. This is because of the advent of the dental implant age. Because dental implants are less expensive than they once were and offer much better results than simple dentures or bridges, this procedure is not needed as much anymore.
