Symptoms To Expect If You Have TMD

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is a broad term which refers to problems associated with the muscles, nerves, and joints of the temporomandibular joint. This joint connects the jawbone to the skull on either side of your face. If you have TMD, you will have some obvious symptoms associated with this dysfunction.

Signs Of TMD

Signs of TMD range from jaw soreness to facial pain. The most common symptom of TMD is discomfort on either side of your face. The connective tissues covering the muscles that control the jaw can become sensitive. If you find yourself placing your fingertips on your jaw muscle for relief, you may be dealing with TMD. Some patients report the soreness of their jaw is worse in the morning or late afternoon.

Another symptom to expect if you have TMD is clicking or popping of your jaw. This is not uncommon as your jaw may be misaligned and you may exacerbate the problem when you eat. Additionally, you may not be able to open your mouth as wide as you used to. Perhaps your teeth do not fit together well. Communicate these symptoms to us if you suspect you have TMD.

Lastly, you may have discomfort which radiates beyond your jaw to behind your eyes, or somewhere else on your face. It is not uncommon for people with TMD to have headaches or nerve sensitivities in their neck. Your ears may ring, or you may experience an earache as well if you have TMD.
