Patients scheduled to receive dental implants may need a sinus lift procedure. It is a surgery needed in preparation for implants. Not everyone, though, needs a sinus lift for successful implant placement. A dentist will help determine if you need the surgery or not.

Do I Need A Sinus Lift?

Perhaps you may ask; how do I know that I need to get a sinus lift? Before answering this question, it is important that you know where the sinuses are located in the mouth. The maxillary sinuses are found in the area behind the cheeks and above the upper teeth. These mouth structures are like empty rooms that contain nothing in them. There are some roots of natural upper teeth that extend to reach the sinuses. If the upper teeth are extracted, just a thin bone wall separates the maxillary sinus and your mouth. For implants to be secured firmly in place there needs to be adequate bone. Therefore, if the sinus wall is extremely thin, implants may not be placed in the bone because they may fail. In such a situation, you need a sinus lift.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

Performing a sinus lift involves moving the sinus membrane upward or lifting it. This lift happens within the extraction site of the future implant placement. The reason for performing a sinus lift is to add bone to that upper jaw area so that implant placement is successful. A sinus lift creates room for the bone to be added. Once it is done, it takes several months to heal. It is after the healing period that you receive your dental implants.
