Dental Trauma

Las Vegas, NV

Dental trauma can happen for many different reasons. Some of the common things that can cause dental trauma are falls and car accidents. Dental trauma also occurs in sports. A mouthguard can help to protect the teeth during a sporting event, but not every athlete wears one. A mouthguard is not infallible, it helps to protect, but things can still happen. Dental trauma can be devastating, but there are things that the staff here at Nevada Oral & Facial Surgery can do. We are here for you.

We Can Help With Recovery From A Dental Trauma

What we will do after a dental trauma depends on the type of damage. Each patient and each trauma are going to be different.

If a tooth has been knocked out, you need to come in immediately. Wash your hands, pick up the tooth, and rinse it off with water. Then try to place it back in the socket. Bite down gently on it. Place a wet teabag in your mouth on top of the tooth and bite down softly on it until you arrive. If you are not able to put the tooth back in the socket, place it in your mouth inside your cheek to keep it covered with saliva. If that still is not possible, place the tooth in milk and bring it with you. We will try to reimplant the tooth, but that is not always possible.

If a tooth is loose because of a trauma, you will also want to come in right away. Try to stabilize the tooth by gently moving it back into the correct position. Do not move it again.

A tooth can also crack or chip because of dental trauma. If that is the case, we can frequently fix the tooth. Often we will decide to place a crown on a chipped or cracked tooth. That way, we will save the tooth, and there will not be a noticeable issue any longer.

If a tooth is knocked out and we cannot reimplant it, that does not mean that you will have to walk around with a hole in your smile. There are ways that we can replace a tooth. It could be that you are a candidate for a dental implant. We will make a brand new tooth that will be held in your jaw with screws. A dental implant will look and feel like a natural tooth after you have healed.

If it is several teeth that have been knocked out, we might suggest a partial denture or a fixed bridge. These are two ways that we can replace the tooth that is missing, and no one will know that anything happened.
